Seems every day we are bombarded with tales of woe. Bad news proliferates over good. So how about some positive developments in the energy sector that involve our favorite polymer – epoxy resin? With the added benefits of reducing greenhouse gas, and therefore the negative impact on the environment and the economy? Sound good? Please read on…

According to a recent article, ‘Growing Role of Polymers and Plastics in Renewable Energy Sector,’ by Pankaj Kumar Tiwari, “A major portion of greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide, pumped into the environment by industries, specifically the power sector. Major sources of carbon dioxide gas are the burning of fossil fuels in the production of electricity and heat in various industries.”

Wind and Solar Energy are key sources that can play a pivotal role in:

  • Tackling global warming
  • Reducing reliance on fossil fuel for electricity production

One of the keys to efficiency in harnessing wind power via turbines is the length of the blade - the larger the blade - the more power produced. Constructing turbine blades using polymer composites like epoxy resin provide superior structural integrity and weight reduction leading to the ability to build longer, and therefore more energy efficient, wind turbine blades.

In the solar energy industry, polymer-based materials are used as coatings and sealants and for material encapsulation. Polymeric Encapsulation (as it’s known in the industry) provides the structural integrity to anchor solar cells, while at the same time providing protection from corrosive elements including dust and humidity as well as a shield from more severe weather events.

The use of thermoplastic composites is on the rise in several industries aside from renewable energy including the aerospace, automotive and electronics sectors. The combination of these polymers lightweight, strength and flexibility make them ideal integral structural components in the composition of so many materials.
