A Serendipitous Journey
After 27 years in the automobile business, Ben Phillips was looking for new side challenge. While his career was progressing nicely, he decided that working with the public so closely in 2020 wasn’t safe for his family. As Ben says, he “wanted to be safe rather than sorry,” so he began exploring other temporary avenues of opportunity - and while he was looking - epoxy resin wood crafting found him…
Epoxy Resin Cribbage Board by Ben Phillips
It all started with a family camping trip. Ben and his relatives took a sequestration break in Sisters, Oregon (the state in which they live) near a spot they’d been before. He remembered a local store owned by Chris Wilder that used to sell cribbage boards - and thinking that the game might be a nice pastime during the trip - decided to acquire one.
When he arrived at the store, there weren’t any cribbage boards, so he asked Chris about them and was told the crafter passed away. So, encouraged by the shopkeeper, Ben decided that he would make cribbage boards for the store – and a business, not to mention hobby and passion, was born.
Epoxy Resin Coasters
Initially, Ben was buying his wood retail until he discovered an exotic wood business owned by Ken Haines. The store offered a number of unusual hardwoods that Ben could use in his crafting as he branched out from cribbage boards to cutting and cheese boards, coasters and coffee and dining-room tables. He also didn’t know at the time just how fortuitous his meeting Ken would become…

Another happenstance meeting also occurred before Ben took his hiatus from the car dealership. A customer who knew of Ben’s wood crafting offered some black walnut hardwood, as well as another resource – a friend with a sawmill, Michael Mackie, who it turns out, mills all the wood for Ken Haines. The trio hit it off, a true “right place, right time” story for all three men.

Currently, Ben’s three-car garage is his workshop for the business he founded, Imagineering Woodworks. And his wife who is “Internet savvy” has created an online presence for the business including website and social media, where she is rapidly developing a large and enthusiastic following in the community. Orders are coming in via e-commerce and local stores are carrying his cribbage boards and other items.
When asked about the epoxy resin component of his creative process, he explains, “I tried every epoxy imaginable through trial and error. Once I discovered ProMarine’s products - I was hooked! They perform perfectly for me - from mixing to application to curing - and their customer support during my learning phase was phenomenal - great people!”
Epoxy Resin Cutting Board with Shells
“I like to use accents like shells and dyes to the epoxy resin to add personalization to the hardwood craftsmanship,” Ben explains. “It was just kismet the way this has all fallen into place for me and my family. I feel so blessed as to how all the pieces came together – it’s really amazing!”
